Indexing Services

Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts
of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This
system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are
on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for
something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the
index lists. If you don't search your computer often, or even if
you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary.

To disable do the following:
1. Go to Start2. Click Settings3. Click Control Panel4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components6. Uncheck the Indexing services7. Click Next

OPTIMISE DISPLAY SETTINGS

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can
waste system resources. To optimise:
1.Go to Start

2. Click Settings

3. Click Control Panel

4. Click System

5. Click Advanced tab

6. In the Performance tab click Settings

7. Leave only the following ticked:- Show shadows under menus- Show shadows under mouse pointer- Show translucent selection rectangle- Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop- Use visual styles on windows and buttons

DISABLE PERFORMANCE COUNTERS

Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several
areas of your PC's performance. These utilities take up system
resources so disabling is a good idea.
To disable:
1. download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List2.Then select each counter in turn in the 'Extensible performance
counters' window and clear the 'performance counters enabled'
checkbox at the bottom.button below.

SPEEDUP FOLDER BROWSING

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse
folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP
automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you
open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing
significantly:
1. Open My Computer2. Click on Tools menu3. Click on Folder Options4. Click on the View tab.5. Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and
printers check box6. Click Apply7. Click Ok8. Reboot your computer

IMPROVE MEMORY USAGE

Cacheman Improves the performance of your computer by optimizing
the disk cache, memory and a number of other settings.
Once Installed:
1.Go to Show Wizard and select All2.Run all the wizards by selecting Next or Finished until you are
back to the main menu. Use the defaults unless you know exactly
what you are doing.3.Exit and Save Cacheman4.Restart Windows

OPTIMISE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION
There are lots of ways to do this but by far the easiest is to run
TCP/IP Optimizer.
1. Download and install2. Click the General Settings tab and select your Connection Speed
(Kbps)3. Click Network Adapter and choose the interface you use to
connect to the Internet4. Check Optimal Settings then Apply5. Reboot.

OPTIMISE YOUR PAGEFILE

If you give your pagefile a fixed size it saves the operating
system from needing to resize the page file.
1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties

2. Select the Advanced tab

3. Under Performance choose the Settings button

4. Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change.

5. Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the
initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.
Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual
physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with
smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a
typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of
virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the
page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change
the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

RUN BOOTVIS - IMPROVE BOOT TIMES

BootVis will significantly improve boot times
1. Download and Run

2. Select Trace

3. Select Next Boot and Driver Trace

4. A Trace Repetitions screen will appear, select Ok and Reboot

5. Upon reboot, BootVis will automatically start, analyze and log
your system's boot process. When it's done, in the menu go to Trace
and select Optimize System

6. Reboot.

7. When your machine has rebooted wait until you see the Optimizing
System box appear. Be patient and wait for the process to complete.

REMOVE THE DESKTOP PICTURE
Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can
slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve
performance.
1. Right click on Desktop and select Properties

2. Select the Desktop tab

3. In the Background window select None

4. Click Ok

REMOVE FONTS FOR SPEED

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system
resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just
those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that
applications may require.
1. Open Control Panel2. Open Fonts folder3. Move fonts you don't need to a temporary directory (e.g.
C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them
back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you
will gain.

DISABLE UNNECESSARY SERVICES

Because Windows XP has to be all things to all people it has many
services running that take up system resources that you will never
need. Below is a list of services that can be disabled on most
machines:
Alerter

Clipbook

Computer Browser

Distributed Link Tracking Client

Doubleclick on the service you want to changeChange the startup type to 'Disable"

SPEEDUP FOLDER ACCESS - DISABLE LAST ACCESS UPDATE
If you have a lot of folders and subdirectories on your computer,
when you access a directory XP wastes a lot of time updating the
time stamp showing the last access time for that directory and for
ALL sub directories. To stop XP doing this you need to edit the
registry. If you are uncomfortable doing this then please do not
attempt.
Go to Start and then Run and type "regedit"Click through the file system until you get to
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\C ontr ol\FileSystem"Right-click in a blank area of the window on the right and select

Google Chrome Gets Full Screen Mode, Duplicate Tabs Trick
Google Chrome has turned out from being a newbie browser, to a pretty widely used one these days, and the developers have been releasing updates to the browser, making Chrome more and more better day by day.
In the latest feature released to the Developer Channel of Google Chrome, they have released the option for full-screen browsing.

One Click Shutdown !!
There are many things you can play with in Windows Operating System. The normal process to shut down the system is: To click Start - Turn off Computer - Turn Off. However this is not the only way to shut the system down. You can shut down your system with only one click. Here's how:
Navigate to your desktop. On the desktop, right-click and go to New, then to Shortcut (in other words, create a new shortcut). You should now see a pop-up window instructing you to enter a command line path. Use the following path in "Type Location of the Item"

SHUTDOWN -s -t 01

If the C: drive is not your local hard drive, then replace "C" with the correct letter of the hard drive. Click the "Next" button. Name the shortcut and click the "Finish" button. Now whenever you want to shut down, just click on this shortcut and you're done.
You can also setup a TIMER for shutting down the system. Here's how:
Method 1:
Right click on your desktop and choose "New=>shortcuts". In the box that says "Type the location of the shortcut", type in "shutdown -s -t 3600" without the quotation marks and click next. Note: 3600 are the amount of seconds before your computer shuts down. So, 60secs*60mins=3600secs.
Make up a name for the shortcut and you're done. You can change the icon by right clicking=>properities=>change icon=>browse
To Abort This Process:
To make an abort key to stop the shutdown timer just create another shortcut and make the "location of the shortcut" to " shutdown -a" without the quotes.
Method 2:
Here is another trick to shutdown at a specific time, for example you wish to shutdown at 11:35am. Type this in
start=>Run
Type: at 11:35 shutdown -s
TO ABORT:
Type: shutdown -a

Open docx files in Firefox without Office 07
A good news for all those who do not wish to download a converter for converting .docx, .xlsx, .pptx etc. files to .doc, .xls, .ppt respectively. There's a new Firefox extension from Microsoft that will help view all .*x extension files to be displayed as normal html pages in FireFox.Called OpenXML viewer, this plug-in (download link) lets you read docx files inside the Firefox browser just like any other HTML web page while retaining all the text formatting and layout.

There’s a command-line version of OpenXML viewer (download link) available as well for converting docx documents into HTML files that you may then open in any other web browser.
Is Your Computer Running slow?? Fix it now!!
There are number of possible reasons for a computer to run slow. Even latest configuration computers with huge amounts of RAM and fast processors could run slower than it's usual speed. This mainly happens due to the vast use of Internet and easily available free softwares and trial versions of paid softwares. With advancing technologies, high speed braod band internet connection is very common these days. Number of internet users are increase everyday and they download such softwares quite often. There are numerous software directories which offer free downloads of various softwares. These softwares aren't harmful to computers but installing too many softwares slow down your computer. Many of these softwares automatically set themselves to start up directory and everytime you start your PC, they start running even though you do not need to use them at moment. All you can do is find a decent Registry Cleaner from google and install it. Most registry cleaners will provide a list of programs which start as soon as windws boots up, unused registry entries, uninstall entries and numerous other computer problems. A good registry cleaner program will clean them too.One more problem your system to run slow could be installing some softwares that contain Adware OR Spyware. These softwares use lot of computer resources ending up with slowing down the computer. If you're having this problem, a good Anti-Spyware would help. It detects and removes if any existing softwares contain adware or spyware. It also protects your system getting infected again in future. The last and the most common cause of slow system is, system being infected with VIRUS. Virus is a computer program written with malicious intentions. Viruses are of many types, some are harmless while others damage the full system severely. Most viruses slow down the computer as it uses full system resources. The important thing here is to install a good branded Antivirus and a Firewall. Make sure you update your Antivirus regularly since Virus programs are written daily.Deleting cache and cookies and clearing history on a regular basis would help too. All in all, a good registry cleaner, anti-pyware and an antivirus is must for a smooth computer system, if you're a regular internet user.

How to remove Virus from USB Drives
One of the ways by which a virus can infect your pc is through USB/Pen drives. Common viruses such as ’Ravmon’ , ‘New Folder.exe’, ‘Sho is banned’ etc are spreading through USB drives. Most anti virus programs are unable to detect them and even if they do, in most cases they are unable to delete the file, only quarantine it. Here are the things which you can do if you want to remove such viruses from your USB drives

Whenever you plug a USB drive in your system, a window will appear similar to the one shown below

Don’t click on Ok , just choose ‘Cancel’. Open the Command Prompt by typing ‘cmd‘ in the run box. In the command prompt type the drive letter: and press enter . Now type dir /w/a and press enter.

This will display a list of the files in the pen drive. Check whether the following files are there or not

* Autorun.inf
* Ravmon.exe
* New Folder.exe
* svchost.exe
* Heap41a
* or any other exe file which may be suspicious.

If any of the above files are there, then probably the USB drive is infected. In command prompt type attrib -r -a -s -h *.* and press enter. This will remove the Read Only, Archive, System and hidden file attribute from all the files. Now just delete the files using the command del filename. example del Ravmon.exe. Delete all the files that are suspicious. To be on a safer side, just scan the USB drive with an anti virus program to check whether it is free of virus or not. Now remove the drive and plug it again. In most of the cases, the real culprit turns out to be the “Autorun.inf” file which mostly gets executed when someone clicks Ok in the dialog window which appears above. Thus the infections can spread

Tricks to Speed up firefox!!
If you want to speed UpFireFox Load Time,Try this trick.Browser will repond twice faster!!

Step 1: Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scrolldown and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipeliningnetwork.http.proxy.pipeliningnetwork.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which reallyspeeds up page loading.
Step 2: Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.
Step 3: Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.
If you're using a brodband connection pages will load 2-3 times faster now.

How to start Remote DeskTop
Remote Desktop must be enabled on all the computers to which you wish to connect. To ensure that it is enabled, follow these steps:

1)Right click the My Computer icon on your desktop or start menu and click properties.

2)Click the Remote tab at the top of the system properties window and check the box next to "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer."

After you have completed these steps, you are ready to connect to another computer. Before you start, make sure both computers are turned on and connected to your Local Area Network (LAN). It also helps if you both have configured the same workgroup as your default, if you are not on a domain configuration. Most home networks are not on a domain.
